The change to Gibson 'Mini-humbuckers' started in late '61 or early '62. On the Sheraton, from '58 to '61 (approx.) single coil 'New York' pickups were used, initially. Of the Riviera, and Sheraton, mini-humbuckers were used, instead of the full sized humbuckers. Major differences being, the headstock shapes (and the inlays and ornamentation) and in the case Same plant, in Kalamazoo, right along side one another, with equal quality, and care. To the ES-335, and the Sheraton was the Epi equivalent, to the ES-355. Well, yes and no.the Casino was just Epi's version of the ES-330, the Riviera was equivalent, A Sheraton was and remains an Epiphone guitar and never has been a 'copy' of a Gibson.įor me that gives the Sheraton a genuine Epiphone lineage and 'authenticity'.

There is one very major difference other posters haven't pointed out.

If you can get to a music store and try both out in the same amp, perhaps with just a touch of reverb (nothing more) and listen to the difference in tone, it might help.I haven't got a Sheraton but I have always fancied one. You need to evaluate the sound of the different pickups (without FX), the volume you play at, and the kind of music you want to play. With my FX pedal, I can make the P90s sound similar to a humbucker, but there is nothing you can do to make a humbucker sound like a P90Ģ) Casino is full hollow, Dot is semi-hollow.therefore.Ģa) Casino is much lighter than Dot (about 6 pounds)Ģb) Casino sounds much better and louder unplugged (great for practice without an amp)Ģc) Casino will have a tendency to feed back at high volume levels, but IMHO if you are playing that loud, you are permanently damaging your ears anyway.Īlthough they look similar, they are two very different guitars. I recommend the Casino - but that is for my style of playing.
